The mountains are dusted with fresh powder already and that can only mean one thing! The ski season here in southern Chile is just around the corner!!

Pucón is a fantastic place to start your winter activity adventures! With so many places to stay, great restaurants and cafés, not to mention some pretty awesome après ski bars to choose from, many people get drawn into the town and stay for their whole vacation. There is of course nothing wrong with that, but if you are a ski fanatic it would be a shame to be so close and not try out some of the other pistes in the area.

The perfect ski experience is Las Araucarias located on the slopes of Llaima volcano. A purely magical world akin to Narnia, Las Araucarias is true to its name. The runs are flanked with ancient endemic Araucaria araucana trees and the resort is actually set in the beautiful Conguillio National Park known for its turquoise glacial lakes and impressive range of hiking trails.

Located 82 km to the north east of Temuco, Las Araucarias is a 2 hr 45 min drive from Pucón. On arrival grab a quick coffee while you drink in the views before getting kitted up. For beginners, classes are available and can be booked in advance. Intermediates will have plenty of time to enjoy the main slopes, while advanced skiers can head straight out to the back-country powder runs. There is something for everyone allowing you to make the most of your day.

With 1 chairlift and 3 ski lifts, Las Araucarias is a compact resort, though it does offer 350 hectares of skiable surface area. With a maximum height of 1950 masl, the views are pretty spectacular over the national park. Once you begin to ascend towards the ski resort through the forest the journey becomes a dreamlike experience as you wind your way upwards along narrow snow ploughed tracks. Photo opportunities of the snow laden araucarias are many on the way up, but remember to save some battery for when you reach the end of the chairlift as the panoramas from there are truly spectacular.

In terms of infrastructure, there is a café and bar available which offer food and drinks all through the day. A small First Aid station, ski school and clothing and equipment rental are also all available at the base.

Prices for 2018 begin at around US$ 45 for an adult day pass. Clothing and ski rental available on site is supplied by Sol y Nieve so you can pre book your transfer and check on clothing availability by calling into the office in Pucón in advance or by sending an email here. Full equipment (boots, skis and poles) starts are around US$ 30 pp.

Top tip:
Every Saturday at 6pm you can experience the pistes with old style flaming torches lighting the way followed by Happy Hour with music and dancing at the ski base bar.

So, as ever, Pucón offers many diverse alternatives for enjoying your winter holiday, and a full day at Ski Las Araucarias is just one of them. Lazing in the hot springs, hiking in the national parks, full day Chilean style bbqs combined with horse-riding, or even just enjoying some homemade hot chocolate while you watch the world go by are all part of the not-to-be-missed alternatives just waiting for you in our corner of the world.

Convinced already that Pucón is the best place to start your southern Chile ski adventure? We believe there is not too much to think about...For details on how to arrive, transfers in and out, ski rental and other local information, drop Sol y Nieve a mail here and let us do the organizing for you.
